TRI Training 6/30/13

Decided I would keep a journal of my tri training out here. That is one thing I miss about Facebook, that weird little accountability factor. So I'm just going to pretend millions of people read this and I have to stay the course.

P and I got the run and bike course maps for the tri this week so went out and walked the 5k portion of the tri course just to get the directions and lay of the land today. Love this course. No wicked hill in the middle and more than half of it is on a gorgeous trail. Very excited.

Putting together my new workout and training plan this afternoon.

Yefem Tibs

Had such a good time last night! T-Man had got us tickets to a concert a few months ago so after a long day at the farm watching P ride her horse, I hopped in my car and headed into the city.

T-Man had been raving about this Ethiopian restaurant for a while he wanted to take me to. He knows the woman who owns it and is the chef. I confess I was nervous to try something so new and different because I didn't want to hurt his feelings if it was yucky and I tried politely not to eat it but wow. Pleasantly surprised!

For those who have had Morrocan food, it's very similar in that the food is served all together and you eat with your fingers.  I ordered the Yefem Tibs which is charcoal broiled sliced prime tender beef of garlic and black pepper. He ordered the Derek Tibs which is beef sautéed until crispy in chili onion and tomato. I took a photo of dinner to share with you:

The red sauce you see is called awaze and it's red peppers ground and made into a sauce (I asked and got the ingredients so I am going to try and make it myself). The meal was served with this rolled up spongey flat bread that was sort of like a cross between a crepe and a tortilla. You tear a piece of the stuff off and use it to scoop up the food as there are no utensils.

I have to say it was delicious. I will throw a pimp out to them: Etete on 9th in DC NW. I want to go back and try their Yeawaze Tibs which is the beef sauteed in the spicy awaze sauce with onion, tomato, fresh garlic and chili. Mmmm

After dinner, we made our way over to the 930 Club to see Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine. I love his concerts and this is the second one I have been to with T-Man. He sang a number of his classics and some new ones, too. He's half music, half comedy act and I have not laughed so hard in a long time.

Definitely a great night!

My Tits

I had such a wonderful day. I was so happy and excited and on top of the world. I impressed someone important that I had respect for and to be seen as competent and intelligent and capable and so full of potential in his eyes was such an enormous compliment. No, this wasn't Alpha. Even though I am still moved when I impress HIM, this person was maybe four or five "wows" above him just in terms of age, tenure, experience, background, and current role. Those who are close to me knew this big day was coming and I was going to spend the day with him and have the chance to shine and how hard I had prepared and all the little things I did to set myself apart and above my peers in his eyes and to have such positive and glowing feedback was truly a big deal to me.

I was walking on air and GBF had sent me a note asking to let him know how it went. So, I did. I gushed like a school girl about it and his reply was,

"You impressed him in a big way or did your BIG cleavage impress him?  ;)"

I was sitting alone in my car having just returned from lunch with this person I had impressed and I read that and it was like he had reached out with a pin and popped my happiness balloon. Oh, sure. I know he didn't mean I was stupid or the only way I could impress a man was with my tits but still....

It crushed me. It truly crushed me. I just sat there in my car as the storm clouds gathered and tried desperately to summon that floating on air, I am SO fucking awesome, yay me! feeling I was just enjoying not two minutes prior and it was gone. Like someone smacked me in the face. Or punched me in the stomach. Or pushed me down some steps. A total sucker punch. Wow. I just sat there.

Do I get mad? Do I just laugh it off so I don't get accused of not having a sense of humor? Do I just ignore it? I just sat there. Hurt. Angry.

How dare ANYONE suggest that I am only worth my tits. db used to do that all the time. I sometimes wonder if he just married my tits and was actually shocked and surprised that an actual person was part of the package. I have had big tits all my life and have had to endure YEARS of comments, jokes, laughing, teasing, and insults about them. From horny men to jealous girls I went from the third grade (B cup already) to my adult life always hearing about my tits. I tried to laugh it off. I tried to be proud of them. I tried to joke along with everyone. I tried to confess not liking them to those who were jealous. I tried to hide them with huge baggy clothes. I tried to flaunt them with sleek pretty clothes. Some days I feel like my entire life has revolved around trying to anticipate who was going to think what about them then trying to accommodate them to avoid being insulted and teased or accentuate them to be liked and loved.

I was so hurt and angry that with all the things I have accomplished and done and achieved to reduce ALL of that to: oh, it was your tits that impressed him.

Not my knowledge.
Not my certifications.
Not my THREE degrees.
Not my awards.
Not my brilliant problem solving.
Not my keen skills of analysis.
Not my clever solutions.
Not my demonstrated ability to lead.
Not my organizational prowess.
Not my tactical brilliance.
Not my strategic vision.
Not my stellar vocabulary.
Not my extensive and unique experience.

No. My tits.

All that was worth no more than piss in a bucket because woo hoo I had pretty tits!

Sigh.

I decided I was sick and tired of it. I needed to push back. I needed to say, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I am not my looks or my appearance or my tits or my ass or any of that. Amusingly enough, this is a man who has gone out of his way to tell my my appearance doesn't matter and I should not worry about what others think of my looks but focus on impressing them as ME. And he goes and says some dumb ass shit like this like he's a seven year old boy and not an educated and accomplished man ten years my senior.

Suddenly the sky broke open like my heart and the rain poured down like my tears. Seriously. It really did happen and the symbolism was not lost on me as I sat in the car and let a few tears roll while the rain enveloped my car and hid me from my coworkers inside who might glance out to see me sitting in my car wiping away tears.

I wrote him a long reply and he replied back with a sincere apology. I responded with another reply and while I won't cut and paste the whole thing here, I ended with,

"I can take a joke and dish it back out but it doesn't mean I enjoy being the joke or that I enjoy having to pretend it doesn't bother me."

It wasn't my intention to hurt him back. But it was important to me that he see that what he said hurt me. I didn't like it. And I didn't want him to do it again. I think there was a part of me that was afraid he'd react like db and swing back with a blazing round of minimizing my feelings but, to his credit, he did not. We ended up exchanging a few more missives with him repeating his apology and me thanking him for not being a douche when I stood up for myself and feelings and we ended on a positive note.

I work hard. I am pretty amazing. That is entirely unrelated to the biological lottery I won in the breast area.  It's hard to be taken seriously as a woman sometimes. It's harder if you are blonde. EVEN harder if you are pretty or have big boobs. It's not right but it's the way the world works.

This might now explain much of why I don't like to share my picture. I am so tired of being judged on my looks. And it is why men like Thomas and Alpha mean so much to me in that they have NEVER....would NEVER make any such intimation. And now, hopefully, GBF won't either.

I deserve respect.

And now, I expect it.

The Perfect Man

I stumbled across this photo on Pinterest this evening and it made me stop and think. I recently read an article on what they are claiming is a new phenomena: Male Anorexia/Eating Disorders/Body Issues.

The jist of it was that suddenly *insert raised eyebrow here* the movies and telly and magazines were really focusing on showing all these "perfect" hard body sculpted men with just about any excuse to have their shirt off (anyone who watches Pretty Little Liars, tell me you don't wish you had a nickel for every time they show Toby without his shirt on....). And, get this lol, suddenly they were seeing MEN suddenly having these insecurities about THEIR bodies and *gasp* feeling like women won't like them or want them unless they look like the hot celebrities.

Pause....

Now, there was a part of me that laughed. Yes. I know. It's mean but I am being honest. My thought was, "HAH! FUCK YOU RIGHT BACK YOU ASSHOLES FOR DOING THAT TO US FOR YEARS! IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO FEEL LIKE YOU DON'T MEASURE UP TO THIS HOLLYWOOD PIMPED PERFECTION!"

And after I had that snarky little what's good for the goose is good for the gander moment, I calmed down, stopped laughing and really felt kind of sorry for the guys. Because, to be really honest, us gals have been dealing with this for a LONG time and are kind of used to it. You guys are pretty new to this so maybe it's kind of a hard pill to swallow when suddenly your wife or girlfriend is drooling and gushing over Eric or Toby or Channing (no real idea who that is but I keep hearing his name on the radio etc) or fill in the blank with the abs du jour.

It does sort of help in a way when, as a woman, I can say that while I certainly do not mind the eye candy, I do not in any way think the way they look makes them a better or a good or even an actually desirable person. It just means they are nice to look at. (Gosh, I sound like a dude now don't I? lol)

But, it's the truth. The picture above is great for me to use as an example because I actually watch the show. I'll tell you right now that I think all the men are attractive in an aesthetic sense. Would I "date" any of them? (Well, I mean the characters they play as I really don't know crap about them as individuals).

The answer is this:

Jason: no way in hell. He is an absolute moron and I am not sure I could spend more than about five minutes talking to him before I'd want to smack him with a chair. If he wants to stand outside shirtless and clean my pool or mow my lawn or perhaps jog by that would be nice but that buck stops there and I have zero zip nada nothing for him. Mah. Nope. He could be buck ass naked in my bedroom right now and it would probably annoy me more than anything. He's also whiny and immature and did I mention not too bright?

Alcide: No. He does nothing for me. His personality is....blah. Oh, sure, he's pretty to look at but honestly he doesn't appear to have much in the brains department either and I have met bags of wet cement with more passion than him. And, no, sexy time or juvenile drama isn't "passion". Most women don't know the difference nor do they care. I do and he could show up naked and I'd maybe let him rub my feet. Because, heck, I'd let an albino Japanese midget with a foot fetish rub my feet if he'd do a good job. I'm not all that picky.

Eric: Oh. My. Yes. BUT...not for the reasons you think. Yes. He is nice looking. But that is NOT what makes him attractive to me. He's tall (I have a tall thing after db....guy has to be taller than me if I am wearing heels but I am pretty damn short so it's not that hard). He is also wicked smart. Strategic. Thoughtful (I don't mean in a bring you flowers way but in a chess playing sort of way). AND he is passionate. Could also be a little of that viking thing in the blood. If he showed up naked in my bedroom I imagine we'd play a game of chess, have an interesting debate about something and then enjoy a passionate physical entanglement of epic proportions. But it's got very little to do with what he looks like and a ton to do with the personality of the character he plays. That all being said, if the actual actor showed up naked whining about some political crap I didn't agree with and showing me he had little to no intelligence or passion and presented himself as 180 degrees the opposite of the character he plays then I'd throw him out on his cute little ass and be done with it.

This revelation was actually important to me because it made me realize that if I think like this, I cannot possibly be the only person who does. AND that it was quite possible that there are men out there that feel the same way about women. Sure...she's hot and pretty but....meh.

None of the men I love are perfect in the looks department. Even Captain Awesome who is a body builder has his little flaws (the poor man's legs are so pasty pale white that it makes my eyes water when he wears shorts), my sweet darling Alpha is getting a middle age paunch (sshhhh please don't tell him I noticed), and the others I love and adore each have their own imperfections but I have to tell you that I love the men they are and this makes those imperfections endearing to me, not unattractive.  I will tell you that the other day when Alpha leaned back in his chair and I noticed his tummy was not flat and smooth and he had a little spill over it made me absolutely giddy. I wanted nothing more than to wrap my arms around him and snuggle up to his warm sweet self. None of the men in that picture above inspire that sort of feeling in me at all.

I have realized that aesthetic appreciation is not the same thing as love.

I have realized that perfection doesn't necessarily equal beauty.

And, I have realized why I am loved so much by so many including those who have never seen me before.

Broken

She said to him, "You said I could tell you anything but sometimes I am afraid to because I don't want you to think I am too broken to be loved."

He replied, "Not at all. Look at the Venus de Milo. Her arms are missing and she's considered one of the most beautiful statues ever made."

That made her smile. He always made her feel special and beautiful.

He took another sip of his coffee and added, "Not to be confused with the Spinal Tap album 'Intravenous de Milo'  which is ugly no matter how you  slice it."

Then he leaned across the table and kissed her like she had never been kissed before.

Gym Porn

Ran a nice strong solid mile to warm up then went in to lift.

Managed squats, deadlifts, and chest press before I had to leave.

Two young dudes in the corner lifting sounded like they were making an amateur porn video.

I got to the point where I couldn't stop giggling.

Do they do that on purpose because they think us gals will get turned on how they might be in bed?

Do they not realize what they are doing?

It sounded like the diner scene in When Harry Met Sally...only they BOTH were Sally.

I listened to their frantic enthusiastic panting, moaning, groaning, and gasping and realized if that's how they were in bed, no thanks.

Now the strong quiet dude in the corner who is all intense and in control and deliberate and precise? Oh yeah...

Don't get me wrong. I don't like a silent guy (db was silent) but I do like a man who communicates his pleasure and appreciation. Thomas and Mystery Man made me aware of that. But a man who is over the top and sounds like a dime store man whore...yeah...no. I can't take that seriously. It's hard to have an orgasm when you are giggling. Not sure it's possible. I wonder if they have studied that. Hmmmm. Perhaps I can get the government to give me some money for that kind of study.

Anyway.

I am a little worried about the triathlon and the 8k this year. I haven't been training like crazy like last year. Mostly because of school. And being sick. And travel. I have been getting back into gear but I have also not been as intense as before. I need to kick that up a notch. I seem to be having trouble getting that groove back. I haven't lost it completely but I suppose the sheer terror I had about the tri last year has been replaced with a calm "don't be so stressed it's all good" attitude instead. Not sure if that is good or bad?

Happy Birthday, Baby

Two packages of balloons blown up and piled on her bed before she wakes up: $2.60

One package of Streamers hanging in a curtain in her doorway: 0.99 cents

Cheerful Happy Birthday Banner in the hall: $4.99

Look on her face as she wakes up and sees the birthday happiness just for her: Priceless

For breakfast, I made a quick pan of cinnamon rolls and added sprinkles and a candle.

First Week Without Facebook....

Did I miss it?

Like a yeast infection.

Meaning, I recognized things were different; was way less irritated in general; and felt like I had my life back.

:)

Okay, maybe I am being a bit melodramatic but you get my point.

A few observations:

1. I definitely found myself in better spirits. Not being exposed to sporadic stupidity/annoying ads/harassment that crowded my wall was a plus. I only had to deal with a little at work and experienced a few moments where I had to turn the news off just because I find the bickering and sniping as intolerable on the news as I did on my wall.

2. I found my friends texted me like crazy and I loved it. Love love loved it. Instead of feeling like I had  intentionally marooned myself on an island, I found that I stayed in better and quality contact with my friends. Thomas, Captain Awesome, T-Man, Martian Manhunter, NM, Alpha, Gay Boyfriend, Spencer, Mystery Man, and others I haven't yet assigned nicknames to all kept in touch with me and I with them. I actually felt MORE social this last week then I have felt in years on Facebook.

3. I confess I was honestly worried I would be bored. I was worried I would sit there and stare at the wall and ache to post or reach out and instead I found myself even more insanely busy than I was before. For some reason, I have suddenly gotten into this reorganization kick and that, along with work and home and family and working out has kept me busy. Imagine what I posted about doing before than times that by ten!

4. I still am struggling with the same things as before. In some areas I have improved and healed greatly and in others I see I still have some work to do. That's okay though. I'm a work in progress. And the progress is still occurring without Facebook.

I got to do some cooking as well. I made this absolutely delicious cake for my brother Leo's birthday:

It is the following recipe from Hershey's:  Hershey's Deep Dark Chocolate Cake

The only changes I made were that I baked two 9" cakes but then cut them each in half so I would have a total of four thinner cakes. Then, I doubled their frosting recipe since I would have more surface area to cover with four cakes versus two. The result was deep dark moist rich decadent cake. This is an absolute keeper of a recipe and will go into my "go to" file for when I have to make a cake for a serious chocolate lover.

I made another cake tonight for P's birthday tomorrow. It's a Lemon Velvet Cake. I don't have a recipe to share because I sort of made one up using a combination of a few different recipes I had on hand. So it's more uniquely my own and will appear in the next issue of the cookbook. I have not tasted it yet as it's in the fridge for tomorrow but I will say it was from scratch (both cake and icing) and the cake is a very light fluffy buttermilk cake with lemon that reminds me very much of a French Yogurt Lemon Cake I have made. The frosting is a nice not too sweet cream cheese whipped cream lemon zest affair. I managed to make two tiers (one 9" and one 8") because she wanted it to look like a wedding cake. I piped roses onto the top and surrounded the base layer with pearls (her birthstone). I didn't take a picture because the kitchen was hot and the whipped cream icing was not handling the temperature well so I was racing to get it done and in the fridge before it started to melt. I shall take a nice pic of it tomorrow though. As tomorrow is also Merlin and Endora's anniversary (married 46 years) we will be eating cake and popping open the bubbly tomorrow night. (Yes, I did plan my C-Section to be on their anniversary with the thought that each year I could point to P as their gift ;)

On that note, this has been a good week. While I have been cognizant that I no longer have or need to post to Facebook, I have found that having my journal blog here has served enough purpose. I still have an outlet to turn to and based on the stats, a few of y'all are actually checking it out as well :)

Now, as soon as P is sound asleep I have two packages of balloons to blow up and pile onto her bed in the morning before I wake her and a few packages of streamers to hang before I go to sleep. We are getting up early tomorrow morning because she wants to open her presents before she has to go to her horseback riding camp (that was her big gift for her birthday and she goes all week this week). I have cinnamon rolls in the fridge to pop in the oven for her breakfast and the sprinkles to put on them for her birthday after the icing is on. And Merlin has said we should put a candle in them :)

Life is good.

Sweet dreams, my loves.

Good night.

The Guilt of Indulgence

My brother's birthday celebration is tomorrow night. Piper is making the main dish and Endora is making the sides. So, I got to make his cake. He loves chocolate so I picked a Dark Chocolate Four Layer Indulgence Cake. All homemade. I came home a little early tonight to make the cake from scratch and then cut each layer carefully in half so I would have the nice thin layers of cake to stack. Then I made from scratch dark chocolate frosting with melted butter, powdered sugar, milk, dark cocoa and vanilla. It came out so perfect and I even topped it with fancy chocolate curls before putting the cake carrier cover on it and setting it on the table in the cool dark dining room.

I cleaned up the kitchen and put everything away and got P ready for bed and went into the bathroom to change into pajamas and was suddenly hit with this blow of anxiety and guilt. It felt like a boxer had hidden behind and bathroom door and suddenly reached out and clocked me hard when my back was turned. At first I wasn't sure what was wrong. I wasn't even sure what I felt I did wrong. Then I thought of the cake. That horrible indulgent delicious cake. I shouldn't have made it. I shouldn't have even stood next to it.

What?

As the paralyzing and stomach churning anxiety flooded over me my brain was rolling its eyes and saying, "Seriously? You are feeling guilty for MAKING a cake? You didn't even EAT it yet. Jesus H Christ on a popsicle stick that is messed UP."

Paralyzing and stomach churning anxiety aside, I had to side with my brain on that one.

I tell this story sometimes but I am not sure I ever wrote it down. When trying to explain to people how difficult it was for me to deal with db sometimes, the best example I could give was that if we had to go to a party, there were inevitably three possible outcomes:

1. I would convince him to leave slightly early due to not knowing where we were going, traffic etc and we would usually end up early and he would be a peach the whole time except either before going in or on the way home I would get "the lecture": You know we didn't have to leave that early, why do you have to be such a pain in the ass goody two shoes have to be early so you don't miss anything what the fuck etc etc etc.

2. I would not try to get him to leave early because I had learned THAT lesson (see number 1) and so we would end up arriving late and I would then get the lecture: You are so rude. Can't even be bother to get somewhere on time. You know we should have left early so that we wouldn't be late. You can't even have the slightest bit of respect for anyone because it's always about YOU.

3. After experiencing 1 and 2 on multiple occasions, I would make a monumental effort to get us there EXACTLY on time so as to avoid lecture 1 or lecture 2 and if I did, his response would be (read this in your nastiest most sarcastic voice): Oooooh little Miss Perfect Jesus Christ you are such an anal retentive cunt...can't be early...can't be late...oh no....have to be so perfect and on time and better than everyone else.

If you are looking at this and saying to yourself, that makes NO sense, you are correct. If you read my "To His Wife" letter you will see I highlighted the "refusal to ever be pleased" line and this is a great example. This was not limited to this scenario. It could be anything from a pair of shoes I bought to cleaning out the fridge to trying to decide on sometime for work. No matter what I did, he would find something wrong with it and harass me about the decision or choice or course of action. Sometimes the harassment was loud and mean and involved calling me names like bitch, whore, cunt, and slut (yes, even if it was just about mustard...never could quite understand what mustard had to do with me being a whore but....) or if it wasn't in my face nasty it was just these wretched sighs of annoyance or irritation. Eye rolling. That "I suppose if you want to do it all fucked up you can but don't ask me to help or fix it because you are just an idiot" look. Trust me, he could get ALL that in ONE look. If I adjusted to avoid the criticism, he would just find something new to criticize. It got so so so tiring.

I think, I picked that up from him. I think that is what was happening tonight with the cake. Because as my brain fought back against the anxiety with "But I didn't even eat it" the anxiety would counter with some other criticism like I shouldn't have made it because now I will eat it tomorrow then my brain would argue that why should I "punish" my brother by trying to make him some cake out of fruit like a hunk of watermelon just because I don't need the few calories and that voice would fire back I was just making excuses to which I realized that if I listened to the voice and did make the watermelon cake (a giant round of watermelon topped with fruit) then I was being an ass to my brother and .....see how that works? I catch my brain doing to me what HE did to me. It's like he left a computer virus in my head and I can't seem to get it quarantined and eradicated yet. At least I know it's there, though. Sigh.

I am not sure what to do with it. Have added it to my list to talk to the shrink about. I did catch myself as it hit me letting loose with a gut wrenching sob and my eyes started to water but I stopped it and pulled myself together and decided to come out here and write about it so as to force it into an academic corner versus letting myself get caught in the wave of anxiety and panic. I am still feeling sad. Somewhat anxious. But I no longer feel like I am going to go down on one knee under the weight of it.

It is absolutely ridiculous to feel bad about making my brother a birthday cake.

It is absolutely ridiculous to feel bad about knowing I am going to have a small slice of it tomorrow night.

It is absolutely ridiculous to feel bad about it tasting good if it does which I know it will.

I am doing nothing wrong and this is just his silly stupid  mean cruel manipulative abusive ghost still trying to haunt my mind.

A dead ghost can't hurt me, even if it annoys me.

I don't eat cake every day. I don't even eat it every week. I have nothing to feel bad about.

Deep breath. Okay. I think I've got this.

The Fool's New Adventure

He told me I should submit a paper to present.

I laughed.

He was serious.

I thought he was out of his mind.

I had looked at this year's presenters and topics and the idea of ME presenting made me think I'd look like a housewife sharing her grocery list at a global quantum physics symposium.

His response was along the lines of "have you met a quantum physicist? None of them have the first clue about how to make a grocery list, let alone actually GO grocery shopping!"

He continued to make his case and I reluctantly started to see his point. Embrace it. But, me? Sure, I was smart and knew my stuff but to present it to that audience? The thought was intimidating. I had no (in my opinion) fancy credentials. He countered by listing all my credentials. As he described me to myself I actually started to think:

I suppose to someone who didn't know me that might sound impressive.

Where did that come from? Another douche bag remnant. I owned it. Sigh. I made a deal with him. Let me go to the conference this year and get a feel for it. This was still a new field to me and I felt incredibly out if my league and element. But, I promised, my goal would be to write and submit a paper to present next year and I'd submit for consideration to see if I was asked to be a speaker. Couldn't hurt to try.

He was excited. I was a little, too. I caught myself feeling smart and awesome with a smile on my face as I walked. I felt this sudden need to reach out and hold her back. Why?

I said to him later that night that he had better be careful as I was starting to believe all the wonderful things he was telling me about myself.... And the consequences of that could be...

Dangerous?
Spectacular?
Amazing?

I still don't feel like I can do this. But "she" had a notebook open on the passenger seat as I drove to work today and by the time I hit Starbucks I had already outlined the first ten slides of that presentation. I may end up looking like a complete fool. Or I may not. But being a Fool is not necessarily a bad thing.

I guess we'll find out...

In the tarot, the first card is the Fool.

"The Fool almost always stands for new beginnings, new experiences and new choices; the first steps along a new path and the first words written onto a blank page. Like the Aces of the Minor Arcana, such beginnings are like the Fool himself - neither positive nor negative, but with the potential to turn into either, depending on the choices you make and the path you follow. But this must not be your concern, because when a journey begins no one can know (or should know) what will happen on the way to the destination. Never let another person control your life. Live in the present and trust in your own abilities - this is the way of the Fool.

Such journeys always imply a degree of risk, and hence the Fool is pictured walking toward the edge of a high cliff. With any new experience there is always the risk of failure and the certainty of change; it is the degree of change, and how that change will appear, that are undeterminable. But the Fool has no qualms about taking chances, so why should you? It is through the first steps that we learn how to walk, and it is through changes that we learn how to live our lives in harmony and peace. So jump head first into the abyss of the unknown, and know that even if you eventually fall to the ground, for a while you will soar." -James Rioux

The World, The Hermit, and The Hanged Man

My first day away from FB and I was fine. I did find myself pondering my future. What now? What next?  Sure. I had a laundry list of "to dos" for work and home. I have school starting back up in the fall to finish that graduate program. And I have plenty of bucket list and project like items to attend to. Perhaps the challenge I was having was deciding WHAT to do. Where to start? Sometimes there is just so much to do, it's hard to pick something TO do. Having gone through both the Franklin Covey and the David Allen organization training for work, I had a general idea of HOW to triage things. And I had lists upon lists of WHAT to triage but still, I was struggling with kicking things off. Once again, when I find myself floundering and not quite able to focus, I'll pull out the cards and see what they say. I don't believe they tell a future or have any magical properties. I simply find they often help me create a bench mark of the current situation and help me ascertain the next step to take. They were very helpful when I was making the decision to delete FB and I figured it couldn't hurt to try them again that night, so I did.

The ideas and questions in my head that I focused on as I shuffled and dealt the simple layout were:

Who's that girl? And, What now?

The cards I received were:

Past - The World
Present - The Hermit
Future - The Hanged Man

I did some research into the card meanings and was pleased (and admittedly a bit amused) at what they indicated and the thoughts they provoked.

The Past card was "The World". I like working with the interpretations provided by James Rioux at this site: http://www.ata-tarot.com/resource/cards/
I will quote his interpretations of the cards then add how I applied this to my current situation and questions.

"After every obstacle has been faced and surmounted, after every path has been travelled and charted, there remains only the last step to the next level of existence - the World, the final gateway. This journey is over and the next is only beginning. The cycle is complete as last, with the vindication of the traveler and the immortality he has gained through development of the self.

The World could be thought of as a time of rest, the time between death and life where the soul awaits reincarnation in the material world and - for the briefest of periods - becomes one with the universe from which it came. All the lessons learned have been put to use. All the tasks accomplished have born fruit and brought prosperity. Every cause has had its effects and all of the diverse threads of effects have been woven into a tapestry of your life as you have lived it. Now is a time to enjoy your wisdom, savour your prosperity and admire the personal artwork you have created, for soon you will start it all over again.

The journey may have stopped for the moment, and it may have transcended the plane on which you started, but the journey of the soul never ends. A new beginning is found in the end, the pieces are in place for a new journey to start, and after that one is completed, another will surely commence. After a glimpse of the Divine you return to manifestation, sure of your convictions and in your ability to someday see the face of God again. The cycle is as endless as the wreath that surrounds the scene, tied together by the ribbons of Divine force, and spiraling around the universe until the end of time.

The World card marks a time in your life in which one cycle is over and the next is just beginning. It represents the final achievement of all your worldly expectations and desires, and the immenent approach of new desires to follow and new goals to puruse. The World itself remains the ultimate goal, because it is an affirmation of life and an arrival at a perfect state of harmony and bliss. This is the confirmation of success and the reward for all your trials and ordeals. With the coming of the World comes assured success and material well-being, as well as emotional fulfillment, and growth in the spiritual sense.

In the material world, this card's energy often manifests as a promotion to a higher position or an initiation to a new level of knowledge that was only dreamed of before. But this time of rejoicing and happiness, this peak of ecstasy, merely gives us a glimpse of the next mountain on the horizon. So once again you must step up ot the cliff and leap off, ready to start a new Fool's journey and find what secrets lie in this new level of existence. The cycle of the Major Arcana begins where it ends and ends where it begins; start and finish are no longer the ends of straight line, but coincident points on the circumference of a circle that encapsulates your life. The present is now. The future is now. Eternity is now."

As I read this, the following words LEAPED out at me:

This journey is over and the next is only beginning.
The World card marks a time in your life in which one cycle is over and the next is just beginning.
In the material world, this card's energy often manifests as a promotion to a higher position or an initiation to a new level of knowledge that was only dreamed of before.

This all made perfect sense. That journey of my marriage and it's collapse was over and here I was now READY to start a new journey. I have gained much practical experience and wisdom these last three years and I can use all that moving forward. The deletion of FB has sort of felt like a sudden lurching stop in that I have essentially deleted that entire portion of my life and am left with a blank slate but this does not mean the journey itself is over, just that particular leg of the adventure has ended. One cycle is over and the next beginning. The promotion to the higher position and initiation to the new level of knowledge is incredibly accurate and applicable to those who know what I am studying in school. Yes, this card made me smile as it was so incredibly spot on in summarizing my past up to that moment.

The Present card was the Hermit! I do confess to laughing out loud at that one.

" When questions about the nature of existence and the purpose of life start eating away at your mind, answers will not be found in the physical world. They can only be found inside of you. You have risen above your desires and emotions because they will no longer help you on your journey. Now you must become like the Hermit, who seeks the answers alone. Only the whispers of his Inner Voice, and the light of his lamp, will guide him now. Eventually even that lamp shall be cast away, because it is artificial and will not help the Hermit forever. His own inner light must learn to shine in the absence of the light of others.

For true wisdom to emerge, there can be no distractions. Any preoccupations of the world, no matter how small or inconsequential they may seem, will be heard as shouts that drown out the still voice within. It is not enough to rid yourself of inner turmoil, though that is a step in the right direction. The next step is to eliminate outer turmoil, through isolation and withdrawal from the world. This is the path of the Hermit, who slips into darkness in order to have the light revealed to him when he is ready. Like the Fool, he is once again alone, separated from all others. But this time it not only by choice, but by necessity.

Once he has learned the lessons and seen his true wisdom, the Hermit will often pick up his lamp and return to the real world, in order to help others see their own potential as well. But the Hermit is not a teacher; he will not lecture his students and tell them all about his experiences of solitude and isolation. They must experience it themselves, for wisdom earned simply by listening to another person is not really wisdom at all. True wisdom and true enlightenment always come from within. A teacher may tell the student how he found wisdom, but the student must go and find it for himself. Wisdom is not a gift presented to you on a platter. It is a gift you give yourself.

The lessons of life cannot be rushed, or forced, or made to happen before it is time for them to happen. This statement, in fact, is one of those lessons that everyone must learn. But simply reading it on a page, or hearing others tell you about it, will not give you the experience of the lesson. Only by doing - or not doing - can we ever hope to understand. Knowledge only becomes wisdom when we earn it, through the sacrifice of our familiar surroundings and all the people we hold dear. If you think about it logically, everything you leave behind when you follow the Hermit's call will remain when you return. The only thing that will have changed is you.

The appearance of the Hermit is a call to learn more about yourself and the nature of your existence, and everyone experiences this call at some point in their lives. Take this as a sign that your worldly problems and affairs can safely be put on hold; there is greater, inner work to be done now. Often this will refer to a problem you must solve or a part of your nature you must deal with before a situation can progress. Only in rare circumstances will this refer to a spiritual transformation, but when it does, know that it will be a powerful change requiring much effort and commitment. A more long-term withdrawal may be needed.

The Hermit can also show you that a mentor is entering your life. This is a person who will not teach you overtly, but who will show you how to find the answers you are seeking within yourself. Perhaps you will be the mentor who is indicated by the Hermit, in which case you must be careful not to preach to your student, but guide him. Your wisdom will not be your student's, and you must accept that before any teaching can be done. If you are ever in doubt, know that all the wisdom you will need is already inside you, waiting to emerge. This light will not come unless sought out, but when it does, you will see that you had the answers all along. "

Did anyone else just murmur to themselves, "Wow" like I did? Wow. Talk about creepily spot on. I interpreted this card to mean that I had made the right call but before I had not been quite clear exactly why I felt to driven to withdraw but now it was like the reason had become more clear and focused. The words that resonated so strongly were:

Now you must become like the Hermit, who seeks the answers alone.
His own inner light must learn to shine in the absence of the light of others. - While this is kind of scary it is necessary if I wish to figure out who this girl is.

For true wisdom to emerge, there can be no distractions. Any preoccupations of the world, no matter how small or inconsequential they may seem, will be heard as shouts that drown out the still voice within...The next step is to eliminate outer turmoil, through isolation and withdrawal from the world. This is the path of the Hermit, who slips into darkness in order to have the light revealed to him when he is ready. Like the Fool, he is once again alone, separated from all others. But this time it not only by choice, but by necessity....  FB was definitely a distraction. As was the myriad of little projects Josephine was working on. I knew I needed to put all those on the back burner but now it made a little more sense as to WHY I needed to do that.

The appearance of the Hermit is a call to learn more about yourself and the nature of your existence.... To learn who this girl is.

The future card was the Hanged Man.

" The Hanged Man is the only Tarot card visibly based on a mythological figure. He is Odin, the Norse god who hung from the World Tree for nine days to earn the knowledge of the Runes. Of all the cultures who embody the search for knowledge in their myths, only Odin carries out his quest without moving, at least in the physical sense. The true quest is seeking within, not without. This may be confusing at first, but only because the Hanged Man is the card of the paradox. The Hanged Man's mysteries are some of the oddest yet most enlightening the Tarot has to offer, and they cannot be learned by searching for lessons in the physical world - you must turn within.

Even the appearance of the card is paradoxical. Simple in design, it is one of the more complex Arcana. The lessons it offers are easy to understand but hard to accept when they apply to you. The most obvious answer to a problem may be the simplest, but it is rarely the best. To admit that you are afraid will give you the strength to conquer your fear. When you relinquish your desire for control, everything begins to work as it should. In a world in which you must run as fast as you can to stay where you are, the Hanged Man tells you to stop struggling - and you can move forward. Tell this to others and it seems obvious; try to do it yourself and it will become impossible.

Why is this? Telling others that they have to hang from a tree is simple, but no one wants to hang himself. The Hanged Man, however, has hung himself, and see how much wisdom he has found! Despite his obviously uncomfortable position, he is often pictured as smiling, and with a golden halo around his head to show divine inspiration and power. He is totally vulnerable to the world, and in his vulnerability he has found strength. The sacrifice he has made is his own freedom and power in the physical world; in exchange, he is granted real freedom and power on the spiritual plane. He gives up his old ways of looking at things and is blessed with new eyes.

Not all sacrifices have to be like this, of course. Each moment of your life you make sacrifices. By choosing to eat with a friend rather than eating alone, you sacrifice your solitude. Choosing to play a sport professionally means that you cannot play another as frequently. Choosing one job means that you have to sacrifice any desires for another job, at least for the time being. The only thing in common between all sacrifices is that you give up something you have in exchange for something you want, of equal value. The sacrifice is meaningless unless there is balance and purpose behind it. To give without intent is worse than giving too much or too little.

As the card of the paradox, the Hanged Man also urges you to look at things in a new and different way. If your mind is yelling at you to do something, then doing nothing could be the best thing to do. If something is important to you emotionally but it no longer serves a purpose, you might want to think about letting go of it. And don't try to force anything to happen while the Hanged Man is about. By trying to force changes, you ensure that they never happen. Relax and let things happen instead of trying to interfere. Instead of fighting against the current, let it take you wherever it is flowing.

When the Hanged Man appears, know that greater wisdom and happiness is at hand, but only if you are prepared to sacrifice something for that wisdom. Sometimes it is something physical you must be deprived of, but in most cases it is a perspective or a viewpoint that must be left behind. For example, a fantasy that you can never fulfill, or a crush on someone who's out of your reach. Inevitably, sacrificing something you value will always lead you to something even more valuable. In the wake of an unattainable dream you will find something else within your reach. Forgetting about one love will allow your heart to open to someone else."

This card tickled some thoughts that some will recognize.

"Of all the cultures who embody the search for knowledge in their myths, only Odin carries out his quest without moving, at least in the physical sense." This card reminded me of Stillness and it's importance.

"To admit that you are afraid will give you the strength to conquer your fear." I think I have mastered that over the last few years. I am brutally honest about my fears and weaknesses. I do think this has given me a kind of strength though. The strength that comes with being honest with the most important person in my life. Me.

"He is totally vulnerable to the world, and in his vulnerability he has found strength." In baring my soul and my vulnerability to you all, I have found strength. The energy it takes to hide your vulnerabilities can be better used to address them. And if they are openly addressed, there is no place for excuses or slacking off. I own my fears, my weaknesses and my vulnerability. I shout it to the world and am not ashamed. And because I own them, no one else can have that power over me that comes from hiding them or being ashamed of them.

This was a powerful reading indeed and it prompted me to decide to sit down over the next few days and look at what my goals were in my new life. I will most likely use a modified version of the Franklin Covey system in that I will identify a set of short term, midrange, and long term goals. Then I will also look at my roles in life. As me, mother, daughter, friend, artist, athlete, etc etc etc and look at how those roles align with my goals. In some cases I think I will need to strengthen connections and in other cases I might find connections that no longer have value that can be deleted. (I don't mean people by this, by the way, but more actions, behaviors, practices, or habits). And still in others, I might uncover connections I had not considered to make and explore those and their value if I put them into place.

And then I shall go from there.

"And don't try to force anything to happen while the Hanged Man is about. By trying to force changes, you ensure that they never happen. Relax and let things happen instead of trying to interfere. Instead of fighting against the current, let it take you wherever it is flowing."

I think that focusing so much on "who's that girl" might be the wrong approach. Would that be "forcing it"? Perhaps it's not that I will stumble conveniently over her all packaged with a proper label identifying her as such. I think by identifying what's important to me and what desires I wish to fulfill, and focusing on those, in a round about way she will peek out and reveal herself as time goes by. She will happen.

Fathers Day For a Single Mom

It started out with a nice sleep in until 1100. The prior day had been crazy busy starting with an early morning wake up for P and I to hit the gym. I got a good run in while P got a good workout in with her youth trainer group. We dashed by the store to pick up last minute gifts for the grad (the picnic was for NM's son who was graduating) and then back home to shower and make the seven layer Mexican dip to take to the picnic.

The afternoon was spent at the picnic where there was a bouncy castle obstacle course and then the kids (P & AM's son) bounced off that to go to the movies (her first real date). The kids picked the new Star Trek flick and I confess it was awesome. But I'm also a Trekkie at heart and love it more than the average gal. Afterwards they were starving since they had eaten nothing (seriously, who wants to get off the bouncy to eat?) so it was time for Five Guys and some burgers and fries. So you can see now how exhausting it was to arrive home at midnight after getting up at 0600 to hit the gym,  especially as Thomas and I had been indulging in one of our guilty pleasures until 0300 the night before. (Season Three of Pretty Little Liars on Netflix....you perverts ;)

So, we slept in and decided to go out for brunch as Merlin and Leo were already off playing golf for Fathers Day. I've been known to play golf and both P and I have clubs but this was more of a Father Son moment for Merlin because Leo will only play once a year on Fathers Day with him so we let them have that time together. Merlin was happy because Leo played well and everyone else wanted him on their team.

Tex Mex for breakfast of course. P held my hand as we walked across the parking lot and said "This is your Fathers Day breakfast since you are my mom and my dad." I gave her hand a squeeze and then spent the time waiting for our chorizo chimichanga (we share) taking her remote control Hexbug apart to fix it.

After breakfast we swung by Starbucks for iced teas and then by the mall. P will be nine years old next week and she now has a definite sense of style which is conflicting with Endora's in a big way. So, we stopped by her favorite store to look at jean shorts because she really wanted a pair. I have my own strict rules about clothes to include no writing across her ass and nothing that is too sexually suggestive for her age but otherwise even if I don't like certain colors I don't force that on her. Endora is much more fussy and only approves plain neutral colors. She hates stripes, neon, the colours orange and yellow, most any patterns what so ever. So paint splatters or tye dye upset her and would never be purchased. I think we've struck a balance in that Endora shops with her for her basic pieces and colors then I go and we get the fun accents, bright colors, or cute stuff that make Endora wrinkle her nose.  P actually has VERY good taste and the biggest struggle for her is keeping it age appropriate as she has a gorgeous figure and poise that pulls off some very adult fashions. We picked out a super cute pair of jean shorts that were appropriately long then headed home, making a short stop by the grocery store to pick up a few things for healthy lunches this week.

Once home, we took showers and laid down for a short 30 minute rest before everyone arrived for dinner. Piper and Leo arrived and we prepared filets on the grill with a red wine reduction; a baked potato bar with butter, cheese, sour cream, green onions and bacon; and grilled asparagus.

After dinner, Merlin opened his Fathers Day presents and he insisted on testing the pocket hose P and I got him outside before our chocolate cream pie dessert. I will say we were all pretty impressed with the pocket hose. It worked exactly as advertised and was pretty spiffy :)

We wound up the day with chocolate cream pie and planning the next round of dinners next weekend for Leo's birthday and P's birthday. Leo requested a Mexican feast so Piper will make enchiladas, Endora is making sides, and I get to make the cake!!!

Now we are wrapping up the day. Finishing laundry, prepping lunches (I threw chicken breasts on the grill with the steaks tonight), and getting wound down for bed.

How was my first day without Facebook? Fine. I stayed busy as always and I knew I'd still have my blog to share with so all is good :)

Happy Fathers Day to all the good dads. And happy Fathers Day to all the great moms who fill that role, too.

Love,

J

My Words To You....

I sat in the posh restaurant on Capitol Hill with him. He had asked me how I planned to do my exit from Facebook as the time was drawing close. I told him what my last post was going to be but I said that before that, on Friday night, I had a quote I wanted to share with everyone. We had been discussing the writing of F. Scott Fitzgerald which had been the perfect segue into the quote. I pulled out my phone and pulled the quote up and started to read it to him. I started out strong but halfway through my voice begin to falter and the candlelit room grew dimmer and began to shimmer through my watery eyes as they filled with tears.

The strangest thought hit me. I had forgotten to worry about what if he thought I was ugly. To a new reader this probably sounds silly but to my old friends, they will nod and smile. I had completely forgotten to worry about being pretty for him. Because, it was not a concern. I hadn't even thought to make it one. That was such a huge thing for me and it hit me all of the sudden then and there as I was reading the quote.

I stopped reading. Afraid if I continued that I would start to cry. I started again and my voice caught and this time a tear slipped and rolled down my cheek. I almost stopped again but I didn't. Stopping would have been disrespectful to the quote itself. It would have been the opposite of what it stood for. I think the beauty of the quote stood out that moment, not so much in its simple words but in the emotion that literally choked me as I read it.

I finished. Half in a sob but strong. My tears rolling freely down my cheeks. I allowed them to fall and looked up at him. He wasn't mad or disappointed in me. He had this kind gentle smile on his face. He asked if he could now tell all that he had seen Josephine cry. I smiled as I dabbed away tears with my napkin and I said that he could tell them anything he wanted because Josephine is not afraid any more and not ashamed to show or feel her feelings.

I am still not sure who this girl is. But, I can say without a doubt she is beautiful and full of passion.  I share these words now with you. This is the picture I was reading from. Sitting next to the window in Charlie Palmer's across from the Capitol all light up at night. Enjoying a nice dinner with a handsome and intelligent man and realizing that I was living the quote right then and there as I read it.

Thank you. All of you. And, I hope you have the courage and strength if one day, you need it too.

Dear His New Wife,

Congratulations on your marriage to my ex-husband. While I sincerely hope that you do not have to endure what I did, I anticipate that your experience will not defer much from mine unless he has experienced a significant psychological overhaul and based on what I have seen and heard via “friends”, he has not.

I am pretty sure you think you have found a great guy. I sure did. He is handsome (actually, I have revised my aesthetic opinion around that but I acknowledge that he is considered attractive by herd standards). Is he still 3% body fat? Looks like he’s gained a little but I say that in a good way in that I always felt he could use about 30 more pounds and it looks like your good cooking is helping him in that department. I bet he’s attentive and intense sometimes. But gives you just enough space so you don’t feel like you aren’t smothering. And he listens to you, right? You probably think it’s because he cares but it’s because he is looking for keys on which buttons to push and he absolutely wants to continue the illusion he’s a great guy as he still needs a little longer to reel you in. See, men with his pathology love love love the romance and chase and game of it. Can I make her want me? Can I make her love me? Can I “win” her? It’s a game. Sadly, he has just won it. You married him. Now, the game is over for him. Now is when it will begin. You see, once you marry him, he’s done. He’s got the prize. Sure, he’ll enjoy it for a while like any kid with a new toy but the novelty and responsibility of being a “husband” is going to wear off relatively quickly. See one of the links I provided below that discusses relationships with people like him.

Why, you ask? I’ll explain why. He doesn’t want a wife. He doesn’t want a partner or a soul mate or a forever girl. No. What he wants is the love and caring and understanding and attention he never got from his mom. Has he told you all the terrible things about her yet? Or did he just tell those to me? You see, he didn’t tell me all those till we were married for a while. Has he referred to her as “the Red Headed Jezebel” yet? I find that how a man talks about his mother is a good indicator of how he will treat you. You might be confused as he just reconciled with her…yeah. Been there, done that. It’s a cycle with them. Things were peachy with his mom then it got bad after the marriage. I think she has some psychological issues around her son and his wife (whoever it is at the time and he even told me as much one time but that’s a whole OTHER situation I don’t care enough about to research). Unfortunately, when a man with your husband’s pathology hides this behavior from you upfront, it’s hard to know. But, please understand it’s not your fault. You didn’t know and you made the same mistake I did, you trusted someone you shouldn’t have.

Let me give you sort of a “what to expect” timeline for things:

First three years of dating: this is your courting stage. He’s doing his best to “win you” (remember, this is sort of a game to this pathology). He will put on his BEST behavior and craft all his answers and deep dark sharing of emotions with you around creating sympathy for him. Oh, he won’t whine and cry like a little bitch. What he’ll do is come across as this strong yet tragic figure that has tried mightily to be the best he can be despite all the road blocks in his way. He’ll blame some on others but take just enough of the blame on himself that he will appear insightful and contemplative and able to learn and grow. This is, of course, a trap. A crafty trick to garner your sympathy and understanding.

Now that you are married you have, what I estimate to be, about one to three years before it starts to get off. I am not sure if it will happen quicker because he is older and doesn’t feel like bothering to try harder with you or if it will take longer because he’s older and learned more after his session with me. Do let me know one day over coffee if we ever do that, will you? Just curious.

Here’s how it will work: you’ve probably seen him get angry. The “tantrum” has probably happened at least once in three years. I am sure it has, whether you witnessed it or not is another question, he hides those well when he’s trying to win you. He will shout, punch, break, or otherwise violently lash out at some object. A table, chair, dashboard of his car (one time he violently pounded a silk ficus tree on the floor like the angry little monkey with a staff in the Lion King…) but you probably have seen it once at least. And shrugged it off. EVERYONE gets angry. No biggie. We all have those days.

The outbursts will be few and far between at first. He could go months without having one and at first NEVER at you. Oh no. Perish the thought. He will tell you how his first girlfriend (and maybe now me, too) would deliberately try to push his buttons and if you just don’t push the buttons it will be okay. He’ll even tell you this, “When I get upset just back off and let me cool down and it will be no problem.” Here’s the inside scoop on that. You WILL. Because you will think you are better than the other girls who must have just not respected him but this is what’s really happening:  that’s the first step in getting you to agree to legitimize the behavior. The first step down that slippery slope. Round one goes to him. NOW he can have an outburst whenever he wants because he has convinced you to either ignore or tolerate it.

Once that is done, you won’t notice an immediate upswing in the outbursts. Because, as much as I call him a douche bag I don’t think he does any of these “deliberately”. I think he does TRY to be a mature grown up but due to his arrested mental development, he just can’t manage it. The once or twice a year outbursts will escalate to maybe once a quarter (that’s every four months or maybe once a season-ish). Again, the times in between won’t be so bad so you will probably even forget them. After about three years they will probably escalate to be more frequent. Not quite once a month but definitely more than once a quarter. And now is when that first “lash” out at you will probably happen. He will call you a cunt, or a whore, or a bitch. Maybe all three at once. Of course he will be apologetic afterwards and if you are kind and understanding as I was, you will give him a hug and love him and forgive him. Because it doesn’t really happen that often, does it? Other women have have husbands that hit them or go to strip clubs or who cheat on them so an occasional oopsy in a moment of anger is forgivable, right? Wrong. Round two has now gone to him. You have now shown him he can insult and demean you and get away with it, even get hugs or sex afterwards if he plays “poor little boy I had a bad day sorry I yelled at you” with it. Yup.

Has he tried to kill himself yet? Or even told you about that? He did it in his early twenties (I remember as he was hospitalized for it). He also threated to do it and had a complete breakdown the week after we separated. Be aware of these facts if you ever take one of those online tests that asks you about it as it is an indicator for the pathology.

So, now he knows he can have an outburst when he wants AND in those outbursts he can now direct some of that anger at you and get away with it. You have pretty much handed him the keys to the Kingdom and this is when he will pretty much give up. You see, when you let him turn you into a doormat he loses all respect for you. I think that was where it turned totally south with me. I revealed I was not his mother. I was this nice kind forgiving person who tried to support and love him. But, he didn’t want that. He wanted his mother. Who was not nice, not kind, did not support him, and the love part is questionable. Is she even capable of that? Again, another conversation. I anticipate he mimics her cold, demanding, uncaring and selfish behavior that he grew up with once he declares you persona non grata. When you do not return his challenge then he looses interest. Who wants a door mat? The only thing you are good for is wiping his feet on now. This is when he will start to look around for a new woman. Someone who might be the right one. The sad thing is that if he ends up with a nice gal, he will lose interest because deep down inside he wants mommy.  And, if he ends up with a gal like mommy, he will hate her because he hates his mother. This is why he is doomed to be perpetually unhappy. Have you looked in the mirror? You had such pretty long blonde hair when he met you. You might think it was your decision but think back very carefully on who suggested you cut it super short and dye it red. I have had over sixteen people look at those photos (including my shrink) literally suck in their breath and gasp at how much you look like his mom now. Think about it. You don’t have to be honest with me, only with yourself.

The outbursts will grow more frequent now because he is being that little boy angry at his mom. Any perceived slight or abandonment (and abandonment can be something as simple as not agreeing with him or buying the wrong mustard) will evoke a huge tantrum to include violence towards objects. Then he will cross the line to hurt something alive. With us, it was the dog. He tried to strangle our puppy. In a fit of rage and anger because the puppy had an accident in his crate, he flung open the crate door, grabbed the puppy and started to throttle it. I will never ever ever forget the sounds of our puppy screaming and gasping for air. NEVER. He didn’t kill the puppy, he stormed to the back door and FLUNG it onto the deck instead. I sat in our room that was over the deck. Shocked and stunned and terrified to go downstairs and if he was still angry would I be next? About five minutes later, I hear the back door slide open and him talking all sweet to the puppy. Sorry buddy. Etc. That was October. That’s when I knew I had to get out.

Has he told you about killing the cat when he was in his twenties? How he strangled it to watch it die. To see the moment when its life passed out of it? This was in his twenties. He killed an animal. I did not learn of this until AFTER the separation. It chilled me to the bone because he actually told me he knew he was "okay" because when he realized what he did and it was wrong he hadn't done it again since. That he thought THAT would make me feel BETTER is an indicator of how twisted his logic can be. He also was seeing a shrink that declared him okay other than some adult ADD crap and when I asked if he told them about killing the cat or strangling the dog he literally said, "No, I didn't feel that was relevant."

Below is some information on emotional abuse. Please educate yourself on this and look for the signs and understand it is often a gradual process, not an immediate or overnight one. If you recognize this is happening to you, please don’t wait as long as I did. I also noticed two children (one girl, one boy) in the pictures. If the girl is yours, please please please be aware that if you think he is “just doing it to you” and you don’t want to rob the kids of a father figure and you can endure his behavior till they graduate, that’s not true. The stories my own daughter has shared about his yelling and screaming and throwing things at her when I wasn’t home chill me to the core and make me weep. We have a promise now that WE will never let that happen again. If he is treating YOU badly then he will do the SAME to your kids. You might never see it (I sure didn’t) but remember, if he hides how he treats YOU from others, he will hide how he treats THEM from you.

I am deleting Facebook this weekend. Not sure how you will ever find me to talk if you need to but I would guess my number is in his cell. You can snag it sometime. If you don’t call me, call someone for help. Especially if there are children involved. My little one is going to be okay and she has pretty much gotten past his behavior issues and does not take them personally but your girl looks older and at a very impressionable age. If she sees or hears him yelling and screaming at you and sees/hears/witnesses the broken furniture or holes in the wall or thrown things she might grow up to think that is acceptable behavior from a man. I suppose in the end you should ask yourself this:

If my daughter was with a man who treated her like this, would I want her to leave him?

If you answer yes to that….please….PLEASE….do it yourself. There are those out there who will support you and I will always be one of them if you make that decision. It is not impossible to have a relationship with a man like him. This is not a plea for you to divorce him. This is merely a Product Manual to use in the event you need to trouble shoot your situation. If things are wonderful, write me off as a bitter kook and count yourself lucky. If they aren’t….get help.

Good luck.

What is Emotional Abuse?

Abuse is any behavior that is designed to control and subjugate another human being through the use of fear, humiliation, and verbal or physical assaults. Emotional abuse is any kind of abuse that is emotional rather than physical in nature. It can include anything from verbal abuse and constant criticism to more subtle tactics, such as intimidation, manipulation, and refusal to ever be pleased.

Emotional abuse is like brain washing in that it systematically wears away at the victim’s self-confidence, sense of self-worth, trust in their own perceptions, and self-concept. Whether it is done by constant berating and belittling, by intimidation, or under the guise of “guidance,” “teaching,” or “advice,” the results are similar. Eventually, the recipient of the abuse loses all sense of self and remnants of personal value. Emotional abuse cuts to the very core of a person, creating scars that may be far deeper and more lasting than physical ones (Engel, 1992, p. 10).

Types of Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse can take many forms. Three general patterns of abusive behavior include aggressing, denying, and minimizing.

Aggressing

  • Aggressive forms of abuse include name-calling, accusing, blaming, threatening, and ordering. Aggressing behaviors are generally direct and obvious. The one-up position the abuser assumes by attempting to judge or invalidate the recipient undermines the equality and autonomy that are essential to healthy adult relationships. This parent-to-child pattern of communication (which is common to all forms of verbal abuse) is most obvious when the abuser takes an aggressive stance.
  • Aggressive abuse can also take a more indirect form and may even be disguised as “helping.” Criticizing, advising, offering solutions, analyzing, probing, and questioning another person may be a sincere attempt to help. In some instances, however, these behaviors may be an attempt to belittle, control, or demean rather than help. The underlying judgmental “I know best” tone the abuser takes in these situations is inappropriate and creates unequal footing in peer relationships.

Denying

  • Invalidating seeks to distort or undermine the recipient’s perceptions of their world. Invalidating occurs when the abuser refuses or fails to acknowledge reality. For example, if the recipient confronts the abuser about an incident of name calling, the abuser may insist, “I never said that,” “I don’t know what you’re talking about, “ etc.
  • Withholding is another form of denying. Withholding includes refusing to listen, refusing to communicate, and emotionally withdrawing as punishment. This is sometimes called the “silent treatment.”
  • Countering occurs when the abuser views the recipient as an extension of themselves and denies any viewpoints or feelings which differ from their own.

Minimizing

  • Minimizing is a less extreme form of denial. When minimizing, the abuser may not deny that a particular event occurred, but they question the recipient’s emotional experience or reaction to an event. Statements such as “You’re too sensitive,” “You’re exaggerating,” or “You’re blowing this out of proportion” all suggest that the recipient’s emotions and perceptions are faulty and not to be trusted.
  • Trivializing, which occurs when the abuser suggests that what you have done or communicated is inconsequential or unimportant, is a more subtle form of minimizing.
  • Denying and minimizing can be particularly damaging. In addition to lowering self-esteem and creating conflict, the invalidation of reality, feelings, and experiences can eventually lead you to question and mistrust your own perceptions and emotional experience.

“No one intends to be in an abusive relationship, but individuals who were verbally abused by a parent or other significant person often find themselves in similar situations as an adult. If a parent tended to define your experiences and emotions, and judge your behaviors, you may not have learned how to set your own standards, develop your own viewpoints, and validate your own feelings and perceptions. Consequently, the controlling and defining stance taken by an emotional abuser may feel familiar or even comfortable to you, although it is destructive….” http://www.counselingcenter.illinois.edu/?page_id=168

There was an answer.” -Stop Walking on Eggshells Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder  By Randi Kreger and Paul Mason

“Given all the difficulties that exist in BPD relationships, why would anyone start a relationship with someone with BPD? First, it is important to remember that despite these intense and disruptive symptoms, people with BPD are frequently good, kind, and caring individuals. Often they have many positive qualities that can make them great romantic partners some of the time.

In addition, many people who have been in a romantic relationship with someone with BPD talk about how fun, exciting, and passionate a BPD partner can be. Many people are drawn to a BPD partner precisely because people with BPD have intense emotions and strong desire for intimacy….  Most BPD relationships go through a honeymoon period. People with BPD will often report that at the beginning of a new romantic relationship they put their new partner “on a pedestal” and sometimes feel they have found their perfect match, a soul mate who will rescue them from the emotional pain (a kind of thinking called “idealization.”) …This honeymoon period can be very exciting for the new partner too. After all, it is really nice to have someone feel so strongly about you, and to feel as if you are needed.

Problems start to arise, however, when reality sets in. When a person with BPD realizes that their new partner is not faultless, that image of the perfect (idealized) soul mate can come crashing down. Because people with BPD struggle with dichotomous thinking, or seeing things only in black and white, they can have trouble recognizing the fact that most people make mistakes even when they mean well. As a result, they may quickly go from idealization to devaluation (or thinking that their partner is a horrible person).” http://bpd.about.com/od/forfamilyandfriends/a/BPDromantic.htm

Here are some signs you're in an emotionally abusive relationship:

1) You're afraid to tell your partner about a normal happening - your car needs brakes, your boss made you work overtime - because you're not sure how he will react.
2) When you do talk to your significant other, he puts you down and makes you feel stupid.
3) You make yourself available to your partner no matter what the personal cost - just to avoid a confrontation.
4) You no longer want to bring your significant other around your friends or family because you're afraid he will berate you and humiliate you in front of your loved ones.
5) You've begun to believe that you're the crazy one -- that you're the one with the problem.
6) When talking about an accomplishment - a promotion or something equally exciting - your partner sneers at you, putting you down, mocking your achievement rather than celebrating it.
7) You feel helpless, like you're trapped in the relationship.
8) Your partner treats you like an object, like property, not like a person with real feelings.
9) Your partner keeps a tight control on all things: money, the phone, using the car, who you see and what you do.
10) If you fight back, your significant other blames you for the abusive behavior. "If you weren't so dumb, I wouldn't have to yell at you."
11) You've begun to see yourself as worthless -- just like your partner tells you you are.
12) You'll go out of your way to please your significant other, no matter how much you have to sacrifice. If that means staying up all night to wash the floor, so be it. It beats the "lecture."
13) You're in complete isolation. Your partner doesn't want you around your friends or family and has convinced you that THEY are the ones who are abusive to you - not him.

14) You've begun to feel as though you deserve to be treated badly. If you were a better person, you wouldn't make him so mad!

15) You find yourself having to rush to his defense whenever he is brought up in conversation. You make excuses for his behavior regardless of the situation.

If you're in an emotionally abusive relationship or even if you think you're being abused but it's "not bad enough" to do anything about it, remember: it is. No one deserves to be treated this way, and everyone is worthy of respect. Even you.
