Fathers Day For a Single Mom

It started out with a nice sleep in until 1100. The prior day had been crazy busy starting with an early morning wake up for P and I to hit the gym. I got a good run in while P got a good workout in with her youth trainer group. We dashed by the store to pick up last minute gifts for the grad (the picnic was for NM's son who was graduating) and then back home to shower and make the seven layer Mexican dip to take to the picnic.

The afternoon was spent at the picnic where there was a bouncy castle obstacle course and then the kids (P & AM's son) bounced off that to go to the movies (her first real date). The kids picked the new Star Trek flick and I confess it was awesome. But I'm also a Trekkie at heart and love it more than the average gal. Afterwards they were starving since they had eaten nothing (seriously, who wants to get off the bouncy to eat?) so it was time for Five Guys and some burgers and fries. So you can see now how exhausting it was to arrive home at midnight after getting up at 0600 to hit the gym,  especially as Thomas and I had been indulging in one of our guilty pleasures until 0300 the night before. (Season Three of Pretty Little Liars on Netflix....you perverts ;)

So, we slept in and decided to go out for brunch as Merlin and Leo were already off playing golf for Fathers Day. I've been known to play golf and both P and I have clubs but this was more of a Father Son moment for Merlin because Leo will only play once a year on Fathers Day with him so we let them have that time together. Merlin was happy because Leo played well and everyone else wanted him on their team.

Tex Mex for breakfast of course. P held my hand as we walked across the parking lot and said "This is your Fathers Day breakfast since you are my mom and my dad." I gave her hand a squeeze and then spent the time waiting for our chorizo chimichanga (we share) taking her remote control Hexbug apart to fix it.

After breakfast we swung by Starbucks for iced teas and then by the mall. P will be nine years old next week and she now has a definite sense of style which is conflicting with Endora's in a big way. So, we stopped by her favorite store to look at jean shorts because she really wanted a pair. I have my own strict rules about clothes to include no writing across her ass and nothing that is too sexually suggestive for her age but otherwise even if I don't like certain colors I don't force that on her. Endora is much more fussy and only approves plain neutral colors. She hates stripes, neon, the colours orange and yellow, most any patterns what so ever. So paint splatters or tye dye upset her and would never be purchased. I think we've struck a balance in that Endora shops with her for her basic pieces and colors then I go and we get the fun accents, bright colors, or cute stuff that make Endora wrinkle her nose.  P actually has VERY good taste and the biggest struggle for her is keeping it age appropriate as she has a gorgeous figure and poise that pulls off some very adult fashions. We picked out a super cute pair of jean shorts that were appropriately long then headed home, making a short stop by the grocery store to pick up a few things for healthy lunches this week.

Once home, we took showers and laid down for a short 30 minute rest before everyone arrived for dinner. Piper and Leo arrived and we prepared filets on the grill with a red wine reduction; a baked potato bar with butter, cheese, sour cream, green onions and bacon; and grilled asparagus.

After dinner, Merlin opened his Fathers Day presents and he insisted on testing the pocket hose P and I got him outside before our chocolate cream pie dessert. I will say we were all pretty impressed with the pocket hose. It worked exactly as advertised and was pretty spiffy :)

We wound up the day with chocolate cream pie and planning the next round of dinners next weekend for Leo's birthday and P's birthday. Leo requested a Mexican feast so Piper will make enchiladas, Endora is making sides, and I get to make the cake!!!

Now we are wrapping up the day. Finishing laundry, prepping lunches (I threw chicken breasts on the grill with the steaks tonight), and getting wound down for bed.

How was my first day without Facebook? Fine. I stayed busy as always and I knew I'd still have my blog to share with so all is good :)

Happy Fathers Day to all the good dads. And happy Fathers Day to all the great moms who fill that role, too.

Love,

J
